Miao Flower Mountain Festival 2025 in Kunming: A Vibrant Celebration of Cultural Pride
On June 7th, Yunnan Ethnic Village in Kunming was filled with music, color, and celebration as over 2,000 members of the Miao community gathered to mark the 2025 Miao Huashan Festival (花山节, Flower Mountain Festival). Dressed in traditional festival attire, participants were joined by people from across ethnic groups in a joyful display of unity and cultural pride. The event offered a vibrant celebration of Miao heritage—honoring traditions through song, dance, and community, while expressing a deep sense of identity and cultural confidence.
Cultural Heritage Beneath the Flower Pole
The day’s events commenced beneath the prominent “flower pole,” an iconic structure in the Miao village symbolizing the profound connection between Miao historical traditions and modern culture. Spectators cheered in admiration as young men skillfully climbed the ten-meter-high pole with impressive agility and strength, showcasing both tradition and bravery.
Intangible Heritage Market: Bridging Tradition and Modernity
The afternoon buzzed with excitement at the Ethnic Unity Square, blending tradition with innovation. Miao artisans demonstrated their exceptional embroidery skills, while musicians performed enchanting melodies on traditional lusheng instruments. Particularly popular was the “blocking wine” tradition, where visitors experienced firsthand the warm hospitality of the Miao community.
The vibrant marketplace featured over 60 booths offering handcrafted silver jewelry, modern interpretations of traditional Miao clothing, musical instruments, and innovative cultural products. These items vividly illustrated the seamless integration of ancient cultural wisdom into contemporary life. A young visitor buying a lusheng commented, “More people now appreciate our culture, and that makes me very proud.”

Revitalizing Culture Through Song and Dance
As night approached, performances on stage elevated the festival’s vibrant atmosphere. Contemporary dance pieces like “Endless Lusheng Melodies” reimagined traditional lusheng tunes, while “Ximaxian” (洗麻线, Washing hemp thread)presented ancient clothing styles in a new, contemporary light.
“I used to think our culture was outdated, but today I see its true beauty,” said one university student performer. Such transformations capture the essence of cultural confidence. Each expressive dance and musical performance highlighted the rich depth and enduring vitality of Miao cultural traditions.
A Heartfelt Celebration of Cultural Confidence
This year’s Huashan Festival was remarkable not simply for its scale, but for the enthusiastic participation and pride demonstrated by young members of the Miao community. From traditional crafts practiced by elders to innovative expressions by younger generations, Miao culture is experiencing a vibrant renewal in contemporary society.
As one young participant aptly stated, “Today, we’re not just celebrating a festival, we’re telling the world the story of the Miao people.” Such genuine cultural pride and recognition serve as powerful catalysts for the ongoing vitality and preservation of Miao cultural heritage.
