Xiaoyao Liu

PhD Researcher

Xiaoyao Liu is a PhD student in Ethnomusicology at University College Cork, Ireland. She is a Zhuang native of Yunnan, with research in Applied Ethnomusicology and Music Education. In 2020, she earned a Master in Music Education at Yunnan Art University (Kunming, China).

In 2017, she presided over the research project of Yunnan Provincial Education Department, “Research on the Innovative Use of Yunnan “Nanwu – Peacock Drum” to Promote Ethnic Music Culture”. In 2018, she participated in the research fund project of Yunnan Arts University, “Research on the Method of ‘Runqiang’ and Active Inheritance of Native Folk Songs of Yi People in Yunnan”. In 2019, she participated in the Humanities and Social Science Research Planning Fund Project of the Ministry of Education, “Research and Application of Native Singing Methods of Unique Ethnic Groups in Northwest Yunnan”. In 2022, she participated in the 8th National Internet+ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition for College Students, and won the provincial gold medal with the project “Yi and Miao Children’s Voice Accompanied by Sound”.

Xiaoyao Liu is the main creator of the development and discipline of nanwu peacock drum – based on the development of the “elephant foot drum” (xiàng jiǎo gǔ) of the Dai people – and the author of the percussion textbook Nanwu Peacock Drums (Nán wū kǒngquè gǔ, Yunnan Nationalities Publishing House, forthcoming) highlighting the musical culture of Yunnan’s ethnic minorities. She has published seven articles on this topic.

From 2018 to 2022, she conducted music courses as a peacock drum teacher in the following schools and universities in Kunming (China): Kunming College of Continuing Education, Kunming Twenty-fourth Middle School, Yunnan University for Nationalities School of Music, Yunnan Arts College Affiliated Middle School.
