Dotted Notes
(Expressed in simple music notation terms, using a quarter note as one beat)
A dotted note is represented similarly in simple notation as it is conventionally, with a single dot. The differences are as follows:
- Dotted Quarter Note (One and a Half Beats)
A dotted quarter note involves placing a tie line after a quarter note, followed by a small dot, effectively turning the tie line into a half beat. Thus, the quarter note lasts for one beat, plus a half beat, totaling one and a half beats; this can also be thought of as adding a small dot after a half note, reducing the two beats by a half beat, leaving only one and a half beats. The score example is shown below:

- Dotted eighth note
The dotted eighth note can be notated in two ways:
- Dotted eighth followed by sixteenth (short-long pattern totaling one beat). To form a dotted eighth note, a single dot is added after an eighth note. This, when combined with a preceding sixteenth note marked with a comma, creates a rhythm where the dotted eighth is followed by a sixteenth. This pattern fills one complete beat. An example of this notation can be found below:

2. Sixteenth Note followed by a Dotted Eighth (short-long pattern totaling one beat)

3. Differences Between the Dotted Eighth Note and the Eighth Note:

4. Differences between a dotted quarter note and a dotted eighth note
A dotted quarter note is created by adding a small dot immediately after a half note, extending the duration of the half note by half of its original value. In contrast, a dotted eighth note involves placing a small dot between the eighth note and its tie line, but not directly after the eighth note. This setup indicates that the dot does not directly follow the eighth note to denote a separation in the rhythmic units.

Other Musical Notes
- Syncopation (Changing the Emphasis of Notes)
An example of this notation can be found below:

- Rests
In Miao musical notation, rests are represented by spaces. The measure’s time signature determines the total beats per measure, and the spaces indicate the rests required to fill the measure accordingly. The score example is shown below:

- Accidental Raise and Lower of Semitones
- Raising a semitone is indicated by adding a small ‘n’ above the right side of the note, which is pronounced as ‘i’:

2. Lowering a Semitone: To indicate the lowering of a semitone in Miao musical notation, a small letter with a tiny vertical hook facing right is placed above the right side of the note. This symbol modifies the note’s pitch to produce an ‘ei’ sound:

- High Octave: To indicate raising a note by an octave in Miao musical notation, a small letter is placed above the right side of the note, accompanied by the symbol ㆐, pronounced as “ai”:
