
Hongqiao is a PhD candidate in ethnomusicology at University College Cork. Her academic journey spans multiple institutions and disciplines, including Master’s degrees in music and dance from Xiamen University and in music from SOAS University of London, as well as dual undergraduate degrees in music performance and law from Southwest Jiaotong University. This diverse educational background has shaped her interdisciplinary approach to research.
Before commencing her PhD, Hongqiao worked as a book editor at Guangxi Normal University Press Group and Shandong Education Press. During her time in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, she developed a deep interest in the traditional music and ritual practices of China’s ethnic minority communities. Her current PhD research explores the relationship between traditional music and the long-standing Tusi (native chieftain) political system in ethnic minority societies in Western Guangxi, combining ethnomusicological fieldwork with social history inquiry.
